Maria Till was born on 1 July 1843 at Petersfield, Hampshire to
parents Christopher and Harriet Till.
She married William Ewens on 13 Apr 1863 at St Marys, Portsea,
Hampshire, and went on to have three children before William's untimely death - the
date of which I have been unable to pin down.
After William's death Maria married her second husband John Bartlett on 8 Dec 1879 at Islington.
He was a widower - see his Bartlett ancesty.
In 1881 Maria and John were at 5 Laurel Terrace, Tottenham with
two of Maria's children of
her first marriage, plus three new
children, fathered by John.
All the records label John as a
labourer, which meant that in later life as he became infirm, money
was very short. My mother repeatedly said how poor they were and that
they lived in
little more than a hovel.
John died in poor circumstances in 1929, after which Maria went to
live with her daughter Florence in Edmonton. Maria died there on
8 May
1935. She was buried with John in Tottenham Cemetery.
Maria's children with William Ewens were:
- Selina Ewens was baptized on 21 Feb 1864 at St Marys,
Portsea, Hampshire, and was a grown woman at the time of her
mother's second marriage, which she is on record as "not
understanding". Selina married Edward Augustus Hall, son of
Edward Hall, on 1 July 1885 at Parish Church, Islington.
Once married, Selina lived in Finchley and later at Station Road, Winchmore Hill - probably number
12, although there is an understanding in the family that she
lived at Stoke Newington at some stage. She would bring one or
both of hers sons, Lionel and Cecil, to visit Maria in Tottenham but then stopped as he 'got to know too much'.
Apparently he was not told about Maria's second marriage which
was considered beneath her. My mother knew Selina in the 1910s and 1920s as Aunt
Lene. Son Cecil was named Cecil E and is almost certainly the Cecil
Ewens Hall born in the third quarter of 1889. His middle
name would have been after his grandfather. The middle name of Lionel
Hall also began with an E, but I have found no convincing
record of him.
- William Ewens (Bill) He was killed in or during World
War I.
Alice Ewens was born between 1874 and 1875 at Portsea,
Hampshire. I know nothing more of her. No anecdotes have come
down in the family and there is nothing
to distinguish her from others of the same name in census and GRO
records. In the photograph she is on the right. On the left is
her mother's grandchild, my mother, born Florence .Edith Cole.
Maria's children with John Bartlett were:
- Arthur Bartlett was born in Nov 1880. He married and did not keep in contact with his family.
His father would sit gazing over the fields waiting for the next
post to bring a letter from him which never came.
- Florence Maria Bartlett, my grandmother, was born on 11 Sep 1882 at Alpha Terrace, Cavendish Road, Tottenham.
The 1891 census shows her in the Bartlett household at 4 William Street, Tottenham. She
was still there for the 1901 census, aged 19 as a cartridge factory hand living with her parents. She married
Herbert James Claud Cole of
whose ancestry there is much on this website. Her connection
with the family Pottery
in Tottenham is through him. Florence died on
February 8 1958 at Edgware General Hospital, age 75.
- Maud Gertrude Bartlett was born in 1884. She appeared in the 1901
census, age 16, living with her parents and sister Florence - also
a cartridge factory hand. She married Edward Daniel Barker. I know
nothing more of her.
