This page tells the story of a third original Cole pot, more than 50 years old, which found its way back to the Cole family from Hazlemere in Surrey in 2006. |
| In September 2006 a remarkable coincidence happened: The background
was that clay plant pots, produced in their thousands at the Cole
Pottery in White Hart Lane, Tottenham during the first half of the
last century, are now extremely rare. They are, after all breakable,
normally kept outside in all weathers, and between 50
and 100 years old! Two are in Bruce Castle Museum in Tottenham and two
were - until the coincidence happened - in my own collection. One of
these came from Lynn Wharton in 2003
and the other from Carol and Mick Stevens
in 2005. Now for the coincidence: Carol and Mick live over 100 miles from their good friends Barry and Brenda Lane, but they happen to be longstanding friends. Carol mentioned to Barry about their Cole pot and he later noticed that he happened to have one in his own garden at Haslemere! He then contacted me via this website. So it was that on 14th September 2006, Neil and I visited Barry, and gratefully accepted his pot on behalf of today's Cole family. The photos show the handover. One of the pots will now be donated to my cousin Richard Cole who instigated the reproduction Cole pots and has been wanting an original of his own for a long time. Barry has no idea how the pot came to be in his garden. |
